The organization that has helped the Miami Marathon nearly triple in size – reaching a capacity field of 25,000 this past January – is taking control of the Palm Beaches Marathon.

Managing partner Peter Handy confirmed Thursday that his firm, the U.S. Road Sports & Entertainment Group, purchased the marathon from the founding Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches and is aiming to turn around the race’s fortunes after a rocky 2011 edition that produced numerous complaints.

Huerta overcomes obstacles, odds to join Kemper on Olympic team

SAN DIEGO — An oceanographer might say some of the same water molecules that passed beneath Manny Huerta when he emigrated from Cuba to the U.S. at age 13 washed over him Saturday as he competed in the triathlon that would mint him an American Olympian.

The unheralded Huerta, needing to finish ninth or better at the ITU World Triathlon to claim one of the two spots on Team USA, finished ninth, his face registering disbelief and joy as he decelerated at the finish line. World champion Jonathan Brownlee of Great Britain won the race, having already qualified for the London Games, where he is expected to medal. American Hunter Kemper finished fifth, earning a trip to his fourth Olympics. But Huerta stole the day.

Into the Wild

His feet brought Marko Cheseto from Kenya to Alaska. Then a tragic run into his own private storm forced him to change course.

This story appears in the May 28 World Football Issue of ESPN The Magazine.

MARKO CHESETO is almost late to class. He enters the lobby of the social sciences building at 9:58 a.m., two minutes before his public speaking lecture begins. He is in no rush, plodding slowly amid the blur of backpacks and students. He stands out: 28 years old, long and spindly, a black man on the mostly white campus of the University of Alaska Anchorage, a Kenyan among mostly in-state students. His skin is as dark as an Alaskan winter morning; patches of frostbite char his cheeks like eyeblack. His lips are dry and crevassed. He is the most famous person on campus, a star runner. And he’s pushing a two-wheeled walker.
